How Much Sugar Is In Your Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans?

We follow the guidelines to ensure you eat right.

All Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans adhere to the added sugar guidelines set by the American Heart Association and the Dietary Guidelines. 

The recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines are 10% of calories or less should be from added sugars. All of the Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans contain between 4 and 5 % of calories from added sugars, much less than what is recommended.

The American Heart Association recommends no more than 100 calories of added sugars per day for women and 150 calories for men. Our plan averages per day are as follows:

  • 1200-Calorie Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans, Signature Menus: About 50 calories per day
  • 1200-Calorie Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans, Plant-Based Vegetarian Menu: About 50 calories per day
  • 2000-Calorie Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans, Signature Menus:  About 80 calories per day
  • 2000-Calorie Dietitian-Designed Meal Plans, Plant-Based Vegetarian Menu: About 75 calories per day

Understanding Added Sugars Vs. Naturally Occurring Sugars

There are two types of sugars in the diet-- naturally occurring sugars found in fruits, dairy products, and some vegetables and added sugars which are considered empty calories and offer no nutritional value.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, which would contribute a good amount of naturally occurring sugars-- these foods have been proven to contribute to good health. 

Foods with added sugars should be limited as much as possible, especially for those with or at risk for diabetes. Americans generally eat and drink too many added sugars, which can contribute to health problems such as weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. 

The vast majority of sugars in our meals are derived from fresh fruits and dairy products, giving your body the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly. We pair foods that have a small amount of added sugar with nutrient-rich food, providing a healthy and balanced diet that won't impact weight gain.
