What If I Need A Low Sodium Diet?

All of our meal plans are low-sodium and meet the guidelines from the American Heart Association.

The recommendation for a low-sodium diet can be individualized due to your specific diagnosis, symptoms, and care plan. However, the general recommendation from the American Heart Association and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is to consume less than 2300 mg of sodium per day. Sometimes this recommendation may drop to <2000 mg or <1500 mg per day.

Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating offers 3 different meal plans and the average sodium for each meal plan meets different levels of this recommendation. The daily average per meal plan is as follows:

1200-calorie plan: <1500 mg sodium per day

1500-calorie plan: <1800 mg sodium per day

2000-calorie plan: <2300 mg sodium per day

These averages are calculated with the 3 meals provided by us, plus the recommended dairy servings. If you were to only eat the 3 meals and omit the dairy the averages would drop to the following levels:

1200-calorie plan: <1300 mg sodium per day

1500-calorie plan: <1600 mg sodium per day

2000-calorie plan: ~2000 mg sodium per day

If you decide to omit the dairy, we recommend talking with one of our Registered Dietitians to ensure you are meeting your calorie needs and achieving adequate calcium and vitamin D. You can reach our dietitians at dietitians@sshe.com or call them at 815-770-2060.
